LaWayne Leno's Piano Program is a continuation of that established by Dr Reid Smith in the Twin Cities over 30 years ago.

A central aspect is that the focus is student-oriented, not method-oriented. Students choose many of their pieces from a carefully selected and varied list of quality compositions.

Another important aspect is that the program is performance-oriented. Three recitals are offered each year and students are encouraged to perform programs as opposed to one individual piece, which is a crucial part of developing relaxed, self-confident performers.

The Peabody Peabody Award for excellence in electronic media was given for “encouraging public discussion about diversity in ways that cut through obvious differences to present unique and individual lived experiences”. –Peabody Awards
